To reach this road I have to travel 30 miles of highway. I head out to arguably the most awesome stretch of two-lane twisties in Colorado, SH92 outside Gunnison, Colorado. I begin drive preparations by lowering tire pressure to 31.5psi all around. Conclude day one satisfied, but not overjoyed, at my tire purchase. I continue my day running 33psi and rationalizing to myself that being happy with 95% of the tire's performance is a good trade-off for price and treadlife.telling myself I don't need to be driving 10/10ths anyhow. This dive characteristic might be the result of many factor.roads condition, hand grip on wheel, etc. Planted in other words and performed like OEM's. I tried often to replicate this characteristic but when I had both hands on wheel and generated emergency stop there was no dive or pull to one side or the other. Only happened twice (marmot running into road and cager rolling stop sign) and each time I only had one hand on wheel. I also discovered, due to sudden unplanned braking, that the car would dive to the left. Not to imply the car moves around like a 70's era LTD with bad shocks but definitely not as planted as OEM. I also notice the BFG's get a little floaty in wavy pavement while at highway speeds (65-80mph).

I mentally start the process of justifying my nvincing myself that the positives I'm feeling outweigh the negative of not being able to release my inner Max Verstappen in the twisties. At more leisurely paces and during highway driving I am LOVING the BFG's. When attacking similar roads at slower speeds the BFG's feel as good as OEM's. After more of the same I find the tires are acting up when speeds are 45-50mph in the 3rd gear turns (which is pushing things pretty good IMO). Although predictable and controllable this is still a big bummer when used to OEM's that make you feel as though you are on rails with no sliding whatsoever. I find the car is pushing going into turns and the rear wants to break-away on exit. After my first go-round in some familiar 3rd gear twisties I notice I cannot go as fast or be as aggressive with the new tires. BFG's like walking on gravel with tennis shoes.Īll is not peaches and crème though. It can best be described as the OEM's are like walking barefoot on gravel. The 1.5 mile improved dirt road I must travel from my house to the "road" goes much better than with OEM's. Driving over tar snakes, seams, cracks creates little sound or feedback to the steering wheel. I find having the A/S tires improves comfort tremendously. I now hear the car rev more (good) and various wind noises in cabin and around side-view mirror (annoy). The planted F1-type stance was back and less input at the wheel was needed while turning. The journey begins.right off I like the tires better at the lower (and equal) pressures. So I could compare "apples to apples" I set my BFG's to 33psi cold (elev 8500). Low and behold while checking pressures "cold" none of them were the same and readings ranged from a high of 38psi to low of 36.5! This explains why my initial impression of the tires were so bad. I felt that would be fine for my ride home since I had been running OEM's at "33". While picking up my car I asked the tech what he set the pressures to and he replied "34psi" all around.

I began my trip preparation by setting tire pressures. My drive home is just over 40 miles and included downtown traffic, divided highway, and some good two lane twisty stuff. I can best describe this feeling as going from an F1 car stance (wide, firm, flat) to that of a NASCAR (tall, soft, floaty).

What "scared" me on initial drive home was the loss of that gokart feeling at the wheel and that low, planted stance of a race car. Luckily I clamed down and convinced myself to give these tires a chance on my big weekend drive. A doubt strong enough that on my drive home from the dealer I was contemplating turning around and gong back to ask if I can get different brand. Coming to this conclusion was not without doubt however. I am very happy I purchased the BFG's as my OEM replacement tire. Rain (think hydroplaining not curve performance): BFG-9.5 / BS-6.5

After completing a full weekend of sport-touring my ND shod w/ my new BFG's if feel I have a good understanding of how these tires compare to the OEM BS Protenza S001's.įor rating purposes (0-10) I am using the OEM tires as my benchmark since I do not have any other performance tire (cars) experience. Whew! Tire-testing with your own $$$ is a tough business.
